OUT LOUD

Privacy Policy

Last updated 30 September 2026

The short version. Out Loud has no account and no sign-up. Your camera is a mirror, and nothing it sees is recorded or sent anywhere. Your voice is matched to words and never stored. Your streak, your photographs and the affirmations you write yourself stay on your phone.

One thing does leave your phone, and only if you choose to give it: the short answers you type during setup, which are used once to write affirmations for you and are then discarded. That is explained in full below.

Your camera

During a session the front camera shows your own face, live. It works the way a mirror works.

No video is recorded, saved, or transmitted. The camera image is drawn on the screen and nowhere else. You can turn the camera off entirely and the practice still works.

If you use the montage feature, one still photograph per session is saved. Those photographs are stored only on your device, are never uploaded, and you can delete them all at any time from the app.

Your voice

When you speak, Out Loud checks which words of the affirmation you have said, so it can light them up as you go.

No audio is recorded, saved, or transmitted by Out Loud. Recognition runs on your device where your device supports it. Where it does not, iOS uses Apple's own speech recognition service, which is governed by Apple's privacy policy. Out Loud never stores your speech or any transcript of it.

The affirmations written for you

During setup, Out Loud asks a few optional questions: what to call you, what has been weighing on you, whether anything is going on at the moment, and whether kind words tend to land. There is also a box where you can describe your situation in your own words.

Every one of these questions can be skipped. The app works fully without them, using its own written library of affirmations.

If you do answer, those answers are sent once, over an encrypted connection, to our server and from there to Anthropic's Claude API, which writes a set of affirmations for you. We do this so the words you say are about your life rather than generic.

What we do with them

If you write something that suggests you are in danger

Out Loud checks what you type on your device, before anything is sent. If it suggests you may be at risk of harming yourself, nothing is sent anywhere at all and no affirmations are generated. The app shows information about finding a helpline instead. Words that trigger this check never leave your phone.

Purchases

Subscriptions are handled by Apple. We never see your payment details.

We use RevenueCat to check whether a subscription is active. It receives an anonymous identifier and the purchase information Apple provides. It does not receive your name or email address. See RevenueCat's privacy policy.

Backdrops

The backdrop images are downloaded from our server when you open the app. This is an ordinary request for a picture. Nothing about you is sent with it.
